Minecraft, the smash hit video game available on both computer and consoles, was created by a man named Markus Persson. More commonly known as Notch, he is a Swedish video game programmer and designer. He is also one of three founders of the company Mojang, alongside Carl Manneh and Jakob Porser.

Notch was born in Stockholm on June 1st, 1979. He had a love for technology from a very young age, programming on his father’s Commodore 128 home computer since he was a mere 7 years old. He also produced a text based adventure game at the age of 8, showing a predilection for game design from the very start. He got a job working as a game developer as he got older, working for for several years, and then as as programmer for Jalbum. Notch left his job to work full time on a game he and his company Mojang had created. That game was Minecraft, released on November 18th in 2011. In early 2012, Minecraft reached one million sales, with their second and third million following not long after that. Minecraft had taken off so explosively that in September of 2014, he and the rest of Mojang reached a deal to stop working on Minecraft and sell it to Microsoft. They sold the game for a mind boggling two point five billion dollars; an incredible amount of money for an independently developed game.

As far as personal life, Markus was married to Elin Zetterstrand on August 13th, 2011. However, the two split by August 15th, 2012, when he announced that was single. Markus is an open atheist, and cites that moral and theological standing as one of the main reasons he likes to donate to Doctors Without Borders. He is also fairly opposed to large gaming companies; he said that EA is systematically destroying gaming while indie developers were trying to save it, and that an Oculus Rift version of Minecraft would never come out, because “Facebook creeps me out”.
