How to Connect PC to TV With HDMI: Picture & Sound

Connect an HDMI cable from your PC's video output to an HDMI input on the TV, select that input with the TV remote, then press Windows + P to choose how the TV displays your desktop. If you want sound through the television, select it as the output device in Windows Sound settings.

This guide focuses on Windows 11 and a direct cable connection. I would get a stable picture and sound first, then adjust resolution, refresh rate and optional gaming features. There is no need to install a casting app for an ordinary wired HDMI connection.

01Check the ports before buying a cable

For the simplest setup, you need an HDMI output on the PC, an HDMI input on the TV and a suitable HDMI cable. Both devices need their own power; the HDMI cable does not power the television or computer.

On a gaming desktop with a separate graphics card, use the output on that card when it is the intended graphics device. Motherboard HDMI depends on the processor's integrated graphics and system configuration. It is not automatically another output from the separate GPU.

The TV receives the signal. Match the input number on the socket to the source selected with the remote.

Laptops have model-specific output capabilities. If there is no HDMI socket, check whether the USB-C or DisplayPort output supports a suitable HDMI adapter. USB-C shape alone does not establish video support, and an adapter must work in the correct source-to-TV direction.

When buying for a demanding display mode, verify the actual PC output, adapter if used, cable and TV input. A cable cannot add a refresh rate the TV does not support. A generic “4K” label also does not tell you which refresh rates and colour settings are available.

02Connect the PC and select the television input

Save your work and position both devices so the cable reaches without strain. For a straightforward first setup, I would shut the PC down before moving cables, then connect the TV directly rather than through a dock, receiver or switch.

  1. Connect the computer end. Insert the HDMI plug into the intended PC output. Check the socket shape and do not force it.
  2. Connect the television end. Use a documented HDMI input and note its number, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
  3. Turn on the TV. Use its Source or Input control to select the socket you actually connected.
  4. Start the PC. Give it time to boot and look for the Windows desktop or startup image.
  5. Choose the display arrangement. Press Windows + P and select Duplicate, Extend or Second screen only as appropriate.

An input marked ARC or eARC can also have normal HDMI input capability, depending on the TV, but ARC is not a requirement for sending PC sound to the TV. Check which input supports your intended resolution and refresh rate rather than choosing solely by the ARC label.

For related port-identification checks, GrokStar Games' gaming monitor connection guide explains the distinction between motherboard and graphics-card outputs. The same distinction matters when the display is a television.

03Choose Duplicate, Extend or TV-only output

Microsoft's multiple display settings describe the Windows + P options. Duplicate mirrors your desktop; Extend creates additional workspace; Second screen only uses the external display.

Choose the mode for what you want to do.
Your taskModeWhat to expect

Keep a separate work areaExtendWindows can move between displays.
Use the TV as the main viewing screenSecond screen onlyThe other display stops showing the desktop.

A television showing only wallpaper in Extend mode can be working correctly: the open application may still be on the other screen. Move the window across or choose Duplicate if you intended to mirror it.

I would start with Duplicate for a quick connection check and then use the arrangement that suits the task. For gaming or watching from the sofa, TV-only output can simplify which display the application uses.

04Set a readable picture and the correct refresh rate

Open Settings → System → Display and select the TV if more than one display is present. Start with the resolution marked Recommended, normally the panel's native resolution. Increase Scale if text is too small instead of immediately reducing resolution.

Then open Advanced display, select the same TV and check the refresh-rate control. Choose a supported rate for the intended resolution. Refresh rate is how often the screen updates, measured in hertz; it does not guarantee that a game renders at the same number of frames per second.

Three checks for the intended picture modeCheck Windows resolution, refresh rate and the capabilities of the selected TV input separately.Windows: select the TVSet resolution + supported HzVerify the TV input supports both
A visible picture is the starting point. Confirm the actual resolution and refresh rate before adding HDR or VRR.

For 4K at 120Hz, every part of the path must support the required mode. A certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is a sensible cable category to investigate, but it cannot upgrade a limited PC output or TV port. Check the television's supported PC timings and the GPU specification.

Some TVs require an enhanced HDMI input setting for higher-bandwidth modes. Samsung calls one such setting Input Signal Plus on supported models; other manufacturers use different names. Enable only the setting documented for your model and selected input.

If a change produces an unstable image, return to the last working supported mode. I would leave HDR and variable refresh rate, or VRR, until the basic picture is reliable, then configure each feature using the TV and GPU documentation.

05Send the audio to the TV

HDMI can carry picture and sound through the same cable. If the picture works but the laptop speakers keep playing, open Settings → System → Sound. Under Output, choose the television or corresponding HDMI audio device and play a simple test sound.

Check the TV volume and mute state too. If a soundbar is in use, confirm the TV's own audio routing. Selecting the television in Windows does not by itself configure a separate soundbar or receiver.

TV listed, but silent

Select it explicitly, check Windows and TV volume, then test another ordinary audio source. Keep the connection direct while isolating the problem.

TV missing from output devices

Confirm the TV is on and the HDMI image is working. Reconnect the link or restart the PC, then check the appropriate graphics and HDMI audio drivers if it remains absent.

You can keep sound on separate PC speakers if you prefer. Choose that device instead. I would verify the selected output again after reconnecting displays or updating graphics drivers, since the preferred playback device can change.

06Fix “No Signal” without changing everything

“No Signal” means the TV is not receiving a usable signal on the selected input. It does not prove the cable, television or graphics card is faulty. Begin with the connection and change one item at a time.

A controlled no-signal troubleshooting orderCheck input selection and the intended PC output, simplify the connection, then cross-test a cable or display.Match the TV input numberCheck the intended PC outputTry a direct, known-good cableCross-test another display or source
Retest after each change. Keeping the other parts constant makes the result useful.

First confirm that the TV's own menu appears and select the input manually. Check the cable at both ends and verify the PC output. Temporarily bypass an adapter, HDMI switch or receiver when a direct compatible connection is available.

Next try a known-good suitable cable or another documented TV input. Test the TV with another source, or the computer with a known-good monitor. These checks narrow the fault without requiring a Windows reset or firmware changes.

Notice when the picture disappears. If the PC never shows startup on any known-good display, investigate its boot status. If startup appears but the signal disappears when Windows loads, the selected display mode or driver becomes more relevant.

For a newly assembled machine, our PC build checklist covers first-start prerequisites. A video cable cannot resolve a computer that is not completing its hardware startup.

07Correct cropped edges, strange colours or lag

If the desktop edges are cut off, check the TV's picture-size or overscan controls. Look for its documented option for displaying the complete input image without zooming or cropping. Names vary by brand and model; do not assume a universal menu path.

If small coloured text looks smeared, check the model's PC-input mode and supported colour format. Some signal formats reduce colour detail to fit the available bandwidth. First use the recommended resolution, then follow the display's documented PC configuration.

Washed-out blacks or missing shadow detail can indicate mismatched RGB range settings. Match the GPU output range to the TV's expected input range. Full and Limited are signal conventions; choosing Full on one end alone is not an automatic improvement.

For games, try the TV's supported Game Mode, which can reduce processing delay. Avoid treating motion smoothing as a substitute for a higher refresh rate. Change one picture feature at a time and keep a setting only if it improves your actual use.

08Common HDMI questions

Do I need Wi-Fi?

No. A direct HDMI display connection does not depend on Wi-Fi. Online videos and games still need whatever internet connection their services require.

Can an HDMI cable send the TV picture into my laptop?

Usually a laptop HDMI socket is an output, not an input. Receiving another source generally requires suitable capture hardware. Check the exact device rather than assuming the same socket works both ways.

Can I close the laptop lid?

Only after checking its lid-action settings and ventilation requirements. Closing it can put the laptop to sleep. Establish the external display first and follow the laptop maker's guidance for closed-lid operation.

Will a more expensive cable improve colours?

A suitable working cable should deliver the supported digital signal. Higher price alone does not correct the wrong display mode, colour range or TV processing. Replace the cable when its capability or reliability is the limiting factor.

09Finish with one stable configuration

Verify the selected TV input, Windows display mode, resolution, refresh rate and sound output. Test a familiar video or game before introducing extra devices or optional features.

My recommendation is to keep the first connection direct and simple. Once picture and audio work reliably, add the features you need and keep a note of the last working settings so each later change is easy to reverse.
